Signs of Addiction
There are many symptoms of addiction. They vary depending on the person and the substance they are addicted to.
Tolerance
needing more of the substance or activity to get the same effect
Withdrawal
experiencing physical and psychological symptoms when not using the substance
Cravings
intense urges to use the substance or engage in the activity
Loss of control
Not being able to control the use of the substance(s) or refrain from doing the activity
Neglecting other areas of life
work, school, relationships, hobbies, etc. in favor of using the substance or doing the activity
Stages of Addiction
There are four stages of addiction that progress as you continue to consume a specific substance or perform a certain activity.
Experimentation
– uses a substance or engages in an activity out of curiosity or peer pressure.
Regular Use
– uses a substance or engages in a specific activity regularly.
Abuse
– consumes a substance or engages in an activity in an extreme way without thinking about the negative effects or consequences.
Dependency
– consumes a specific substance and engages in obsessive behaviors or activities regardless of the adverse affect on their body or life.
